Every United States citizen is allowed to receive a free annual credit report thanks to a new federal law amendment that has been recently put into place called the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). This law allows for you to request one copy of your credit report every 12 months from each of the three major credit bureaus.
Equifax, Experian and Trans Union are the three major credit bureaus in the United States. Each credit bureau works independently from one another, in fact they are competitors. Therefore, your credit report will more than likely vary from bureau to bureau. This is because some creditors only report to one or two bureaus and other creditors report to all three. You can order your free annual credit report from each bureau all at the same time or you can order them individually.
It is important for people to review their annual credit report to check for errors or omissions. Knowing what is on your credit report is especially important if you are considering making a major purchase, such as buying a home. Checking your credit report for accuracy can save you time with the approval process and will give you the knowledge you need to ensure that you are getting the best interest rate possible.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has provided a web site for US residents to obtain a free copy of their credit reports or you can call 877-322-8228 to make your request.
